Q1 — Why does London sit high on the burnout-risk table?

It’s not easy to say specifically but in general the culture of overwork in London is one of the biggest reasons why there are so many cases of burnout here.

Q2 — Which local stats worry you most, and why?

The high amount of working on weekends is a worry and missing medical appointment is so bad for longer term health. A healthy work life balance is key and while sometimes working hard for overtime for a deadline is not avoidable when it becomes the norm then peoples’ mental and physical health will pay the price.

Q3 — How is long-term overwork affecting employees?

The evidence is that long term stress is not good for physical or mental health. It leaves people at higher risk of becoming unwell or exacerbating existing conditions.

Q4 — Why should employers care, and what are the business risks?

It’s not good for business. Having staff who are absent or leave or too stressed is not productive. It’s not efficient to keep replacing staff. It is costly and causes disruption to teams and work. If employees have a long term condition or neurodiversity if the employer does not put ‘Reasonable adjustments’ in place they could find themselves liable to claims for compensation under the Equality Act .

Q5 — Practical steps to curb overwork and burnout

Culture is very important. The unwritten rules, so managers can be good role models. Take annual leave, don’t answer messages when off work.

Don’t expect employees to work when they’re off. Offer incentives like gym membership. Most of all have good relationships with staff. Listen when they say they are at capacity. They know the job and themselves and will often have good ideas for change/to be productive.
